Farm Manager 2018 returns as we attempt the “An Old School” scenario, where we are forbidden from using any sort of farm machinery so it’s all hands to the field(s)!

We start, as ever, with bees to produce the always profitable honey. However, our starting money is pretty limited so progress is slow.

We also rejig our staff around to make some savings on wages, as the staff employed by the scenario weren’t cheap.

Then a plan is formed that involves the cunning use of training. If only we had enough money to get all that training completed…

Manage your own farm in the game Farm Manager 2018! To expand your farm business, produce cheap and sell your products in high prices. Control the process of land cultivation, employ the best staff, buy the most appropriate farm equipment, raise livestock and process the harvested crops. Various camera modes allow you to enter into a strategic view as well as to look at the world through the eyes of the employee. Respond to the changing weather and seasons. Create a greenhouse to sell crops in early spring. Buy new and used, special agricultural machinery, to quickly collect and sell crops before their expiration date. Optimize costs and employ seasonal workers only at the harvest time. Accept challenges from neighbors to prove who is the best farmer in the area.

  1. As I watched you getting started, I kept wondering why you were thinking of getting big production buildings and all that goes with them. Use the KISS system to make your million without machinery. Bees make a lot of money 3/4 of the year. Cows make a lot of money all year around. I would have increased the number of cows and put in some bees… because they do make good money for the farm. That grass should be used as feed… and then the field dismantled. I would buy silage for the cows and add more cows as I could and keep selling their milk and meat off. That would cut down on the number of staff needed and on the fields and orchards and such. Cows eat apples so I'd feed them the apples as variety and then get rid of the orchard at year's end. But I'm interested to see how convoluted you make your farm. 🙂

  3. The challenge seems very hard! I think it would take you about 3-4 years to make it. I'd suggest going into more raspberries, orchards and greenhouses. Crops take A LOT of time to harvest by hand and so do cucumbers. Pumpkins take quite long but are very profitable. Orchards are probably quickest to work through but you need to wait a year for them… Good job on the challenge so far!

  4. I would plough that grass field and fill it full of Raspberry's making a constant flow of big money and just buy in grass when needed.

  5. Every single scenario's starting workers are overpaid, ridiculously so in some cases.

    You shouldn't need a loan. Get some more hives in and build up your bank balance while you complete the training to reduce the cost of buildings by 30%.

    That useless grass field could be replaced with three 23×12 fields with different crops (sunflowers, corn, etc.) each of which would only need 4 workers at a time. It cost you over 1,000f in wages to harvest the grass that you could have bought for 500f. Just buy in grass and silage for your cows and sheep (it's a shame the game doesn't allow you to automatically buy a set amount of grass and silage every month). You can switch off the automatic management of their food and just give them 50% grass and 50% silage – your apples are far too valuable to be fed to cows! One crop of apples should give you enough cash pay to irrigate multiple fields (including their orchard).

    If you plant corn early enough in the year you should be able to get two crops of it from its field each year (and corn flour is the most valuable flour, btw).

    I recommend multiple small fields (10x30m at most) with a lot of them growing strawberries and raspberries. Being perennials they only need ploughing, cultivating and fertilising once too, which is an added bonus. All you have to do every year is spray them with the various agrochemicals if you want to (for some reason, when they're harvested it removes any existing infestations). Once you've completed all the building training and saved up enough to build a small frozen food factory to freeze the berries then your bank balance should be looking healthier by the minute.

    A team of three harvest workers can manage seven or eight greenhouses of strawberries if you get them in sequence. As long as they're irrigated their quality won't drop, so there's no drawback while you're getting the sequence set up. This will deliver a steady stream of strawberries to your frozen food factory, which can't be a bad thing. Just bear in mind that strawberries and raspberries go off 10 days after they're picked and so can't be reliably autotraded until you either upgrade the farmhouse or get a cooled warehouse.

    The shift-click to move resources only works between warehouses and barns.

    Irrigation for the 10×10 fields is only 1,000f. It's well worthwhile in my opinion as it means (a) your workers can be doing more useful things instead of watering and (b) the quality of crops doesn't deteriorate once it's ready to harvest. This means your buckwheat and colz won't waste away if you don't harvest them (you do still need to have treated crops for fungus, insects and weeds before they finish growing, though).

    It's irritating that the arbor is, in spite of its description, purely decorative. Bad game! Bad!
