Securely Erase SSD Drive For Free

So you want to secure erase your SSD and don’t know how? well solid state drives are not the same as a mecanical hard drive and you have to be very carefull when wipeing a SSD. So whether you are scrubbing the drive clean for peace of mind or whether you are selling the computer. Its best to wipe the data from the drive so it can never be recovered via data recovery software. I am going to be showing you how to Sanitize a Samsung SSD drive using Samsung Magician. This software can use downloaded for free and other SSD brands with have the own type of erasing tool or software.

Using this Secure Erase method will remove and wipe all data on the SSD that your are runing it on. This is the best way to wipe and erase a SSD without putting a lot of wear and tear on the SSD. SSDs store data differently from hard disk drives and it has to be done this way using ATA Secure Erase.

Most brands of SSDs Have a built-in command called TRIM, the ATA Secure Erase feature will tell the on-board firmware to run a sanitization on the requred drive to remove all data. I did make a video a while ago on how to use Parted Magic to wipe SSD with ATA Secure Erase. Its not free, but I will leave a link for that video.

Please help. I have a Samsung 850evo and got to the part where it says unplug the sata, I did that and plugged in back in after a few seconds and it after I click enter it takes me back to the screen to select a drive again

Please add that people have to make sure that any previous windows install, recovery or boot files are not on the SSD when doing this or Windows will not boot back up.

You'll have to make a fresh install of windows without the SSD available first!

Thank you so much for the video! However, I'm having some issues with this. For some reason it says my "drive is not supported" and the "Secure Erase" button does not even show up.

Do you need to create the bootable usb drive if it is a secondary storage device?

  • comment-avatar

i watch your old parted magic video paid $9 and was not showing the ssd to erase, waste of time and money. And you create new video now for free. not even fucking download link, how will know which one is.

I don´t understand the need to create a bootable USB. Is this only for people who have one single SSD drive ? I mean, If I have more than one SSD drive in my case, why can´t I just erase the data on it ? The need to create a bootable USB beats me, technically speaking.

Suppose I buy a larger capacity SSD drive to perform a fresh OS install. Now I want to erase and reutilize the older SSD as additional storage or use it as a boot SSD for another PC. So why the bootable USB ? Is this peculiar to ¨secure¨ erase ?  Think I might be missing a basic concept here. 🙁

Thanks)) But when I'm restarting computer with usb, and click "y" to accept erase, i get message "secure erase not supported". How to fix it? Help me please. (ssd samsung 850 evo 250gb)

if I want my computer erased I just let my mum use it. She has a nack for completely destroying an O.S. in less than a few minutes.

The Samsung Magician app that prepares the USB drive is extremely 'fussy'. I tested several known good USB drives (FAT32 and NTFS) and the app failed on each one one them. However, on the third attempt it worked. I reformatted each drive several times and could repeat this behaviour.
So if you get an error reported when making the USB drive, try at least 3 times. If this still fails, use Windows to reformat the USB drive and then try again several times.

Britec09 I need your help desperatly ;( I watched your older videos about it, I have problem with 2 bluescreens, One is Driver power state faliure, I saw on the forums that I should update Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver, but it cant be updated coz of .netframework 4.5 or something, so I checked your video, tried every step, even when for that forcing delete, it didnt help, I cant seem to find .netframework in my control panet, saw it in turn windows features of and on but still they are there not removed, and I dont know what to do anymore, I am using windows 8.1.

Next bluescreen is IRQL NOT less or equal one, it happens usually when I try to run my virtual wifi, usually in about 30 minutes when I start virtual hosted network, updating drivers didnt help, updating bios didnt help I am lost, if you have something to help me here please do, because I am on the edge and I don't know what to do anymore ;(

Do you know if this method writes to the memory and shortens the life of the drive, or is it an internal command to the nand memorys to drop the charge only?
